PAST COMMISSIONS

A deeper dive into some of Emmelyn's previously-commissioned artworks from 2014 to present.

The Unicorn

A colorful custom oil painting by Emmelyn Redd of a young woman standing in a forest clearing with a unicorn, her best friend and companion. The woman is a warrior, with a sword in a hilt at her side. She has on a purple dress with bits of armor, and has red hair. There is a mountain in the background along with many different trees. A mama raccoon with her baby, a mama deer with her fawn, a pair of frogs, a cougar, and a couple of squirrels can be found throughout. Snow is on the ground but is just melting as springtime rolls in. Flowers are blooming, and the animals are all curious to see what the woman and the unicorn are up to.

Digital Concept Art

The client requested this painting to commemorate her 50th birthday. No reference images were given other than photos of the client's face, so the composition was created from scratch based solely off of a description of what the client wanted the image to include. Here is a summary of the description given:

armor. A sheathed sword at her side indicates her skill in combat, which she chooses not to use in this current moment of greeting her long-time friend. The forest is in bloom, having experienced a late snowfall that is now melting from the springtime warmth, reminiscent of Narnia. There is flowing water nearby, and a prominent mountain in the distance (a castle on the mountain was a desired inclusion at first, but was later decided against). The client's favorite animals from her childhood are nearby in the scene - curious deer, squirrels (look closely), raccoons, frogs, and even a mountain lion snoozing in the trees. No one is coming or going, no living being is alone, and all is peaceful and safe.

The client as her younger self in a forest with a unicorn next to her, as partners, equals. Her auburn hair is down, her dress akin to what the Lady Guinevere would wear with the addition of light

Emmelyn decided to design the initial concept digitally before moving on to the physical painting so that she could have a clearer direction for the piece to head, and to make sure all of what was described was included in the final image.

As a gift for his health-compromised wife, the client requested a painting of her with her three German Shepherd service dogs, with the addition of their two new puppies not included in the original photo. Using individual photographs of the puppies provided by the client, as well as other references found on the web, Emmelyn did her best to incorporate the pups into the painting as if they were present that day. She was so touched when she got to see the wife's tearful reaction to the final 24 x 36" piece, saying that Emmelyn had captured 5 of the most important things in her life that kept her fighting for her health.

Morning Mist Print Fix

White paint strokes added to the print of Morning Mist

This 36 x 48" art print was purchased online by the clients to furnish their new home. After it arrived, they noticed that splotches of matte white paint had been added on top of the glossy canvas print that clearly weren't in the original piece. The clients eventually agreed that the whole thing looked off, but by that time it was too late to get a replacement, so they contacted Emmelyn who went to see it for herself. The original manufacturer had painted the white splotches on top of the print to add texture, but overall it ended up being too distracting and ruined the impressionistic river landscape.

Original white paint strokes added to the print by the seller.

After assessing the piece and believing she could fix the issue, Emmelyn painted over the white strokes to restore the river as shown in the original image, while at the same time texturing the piece throughout with color-matching paint strokes so that there was texture throughout the painting, not in solely that one area. To better integrate the changes she made, Emmelyn finished by painting a clear gloss medium over the entire piece. The clients were very happy with the final result after she delivered it back to them.

The Village Tavern

(Inspired by Disney's "Gaston")

A digital drawing by Emmelyn Redd of a wattle and daub village tavern inspired by Beauty and the Beast with reindeer mounts on the wall and a roaring fireplace with a portrait of a young man over the fireplace.

In early 2024, Emmelyn was asked to create a background for a show put on by Idaho's Cantus Youth Choirs in the spring. The singers were performing several popular songs from Disney's animated films, with a background to fit each song displayed on a giant LED screen behind them on stage. Many of the backgrounds were able to be rendered using AI and digital compositing, but for this song in particular the director wanted many smaller details included that a software could not produce, such as a framed portrait above the fireplace of the student singer playing Gaston.

Starting with a base image of a tavern which she generated using Adobe Firefly, Emmelyn drew over the image digitally in ProCreate to clarify the details, make it appear more "wattle and daub", and add in the features that she and the Cantus director had discussed for the background. Those included deer mounts on the wall, an antler chandelier, a rifle on the mantle, and a portrait of the student portraying Gaston above the fireplace.
